How To Install A Video Doorbell: Step 1
The first step to install a wired video doorbell is to disconnect the power from your existing doorbell. Turn off the circuit breakers in your home one by one, until your doorbell no longer rings when pressed. Because you are working with potentially live wires, make sure that you also use a non-contact voltage tester to ensure the power is truly off before proceeding.
Next, find the transformer that converts the mains power to a lower voltage. This will usually be near your circuit breakers, or sometimes next to the doorbell ringer. Check the voltage it lists. It should be between 16 and 24 Volts. If it is higher or lower (sometimes it comes in 8 Volts), you might need to replace it before you can continue installation. Most manufacturers offer a new transformer like this one from Ring. (If you need to complete this step, make sure that you flip your breaker back on to test whether the new transformer is working.)
Once the power is disconnected, remove your existing doorbell. Most have a cover that pops off with a bit of prying and a screw or two that hold it in place. On the back there will be two wires that carry the power from the transformer and the chime. Pressing the button completes this circuit to make the chime sound. Disconnect the wires from the doorbell, but don’t pull the wires out: You’ll need to use them for your new video doorbell.

Take the cover off the chime inside your house and examine the connections. There will usually be three, labeled Front, Trans and Rear. If your wired doorbell is compatible with your home’s chime, such as our the Ring Video Doorbell 2 or the Google Nest Wired (2nd Gen), install the power adapter and connect the wires. You can usually find a map or details in the doorbell’s manual for reference, as each doorbell’s connections may differ.
If your wired video doorbell is incompatible with your chime, you can still use the existing wiring by disconnecting it and rewiring it as described in the manual to send power straight to the doorbell.

How To Install A Video Doorbell: Step 3
Once the wires are connected, you can attach your new video doorbell to your porch or siding. It comes with a mounting plate that you use in the same spot as your old doorbell, including screws or a sticky plate to attach to the doorframe, depending on the video doorbell you chose. Many also offer a built-in bubble level to make sure that the plate is mounted straight, too, so be sure to use that. If not, you can add a 9-inch level to your home’s toolbox for less than $10.
Remember to feed the old power cable through the mounting plate so it won’t be visible when you mount the doorbell on it. Now, connect these two wires to the back of the doorbell, making sure that the wires are firmly held in the screw terminals. Attach the doorbell to the mounting plate, ensuring the cable is not caught between the doorbell and the mounting plate as you attach it.
How To Install A Video Doorbell: Step 4
Once everything is connected, flip your power breaker back on. If it immediately turns off, it could be a wiring issues. Double check your wiring to make sure everything is connected properly. You can also check that there are no short circuits or worn cables.
Once the power is on, you should see a light on the doorbell, and it’s time to install the app and connect it to your home’s Wi-Fi. It should only take a few minutes, and once it’s connected, you can test your feed, your notifications and more. Once you’ve tested it, your doorbell installation is complete.

Are Video Doorbells Easy To Install?
Wireless video doorbells are much easier to install. All you have to do is remove your existing doorbell and cables, then install the new wireless doorbell. Charge the battery, then run the App from the manufacturer to connect it to your Wi-Fi network. Because they run off a battery and connect to your Wi-Fi, there is no need for cables or other connections.
